Hello, amazing readers! 🌞🌙
The magic of a solar or lunar eclipse is a mesmerizing event
that people across ages and cultures have been enchanted by for centuries. But
looking directly at the sun, especially during a solar eclipse, is harmful and
can cause permanent eye damage. That's why we're going to craft a DIY eclipse
viewer today. It’s safe, easy, and you'll probably find most of the needed
items lying around your house!
Why You Need This Box:
To appreciate the grandeur of an eclipse without risking your vision. This DIY
viewer will project the image of the sun and the moon onto a white surface,
allowing you to safely watch the entire event.
What You'll Need:
- A long
cardboard box (a shoebox works great!)
- Aluminum
foil
- White
paper
- A pin
or a small nail
- Scissors
or a box cutter
- Tape
Step-by-Step Guide to Your DIY Eclipse Viewer:
- Prepare
the Box:
Empty out your cardboard box. If you have a particularly long box, the projected image will be larger and clearer, but a shoebox will do the job too. - Cut
a Small Hole:
On one end of the box's short side, cut a small square hole. This hole should be around 2 cm x 2 cm (or roughly an inch on each side). - Foil
It:
Take a piece of aluminum foil and cover the hole you just cut out. Make sure it's smooth and tight. Secure it in place using tape. - Pinhole
Magic:
Now, using your pin or small nail, poke a tiny hole in the center of the foil. This will act as your lens, allowing the sunlight to enter and project the image of the sun and the moon inside the box. - Viewing
Screen:
On the inside of the box, opposite the foil hole, tape a piece of white paper. This will be your screen where the image of the sun and the eclipse will be projected. - Final
Touches:
Seal the box. Cut a viewing hole on the side of the box, next to the screen, big enough for you to look inside comfortably.
How to Use Your Eclipse Viewer:
- Stand
with your back to the sun.
- Point
the foil side of the box towards the sun.
- Look
through the viewing hole on the side. You should see a projected image of
the sun on the white paper inside. As the moon passes in front of the sun,
you'll witness the entire eclipse safely and clearly!
Safety First:
Remember, NEVER look directly at the sun without appropriate eye protection.
This DIY box viewer is meant for indirect viewing. Always prioritize your
safety and enjoy the celestial event!
